The first thing that catches your eye when you look at the new Duke 390 is its completely revamped appearance, which is inspired by the bigger and more powerful KTM models like the 890 Duke and the 1290 Super Duke R. The bike features a new LED headlight unit with integrated split DRLs, which give it a distinctive and menacing look. The fuel tank is also redesigned and has aerodynamic shrouds that extend beyond the forks. The chassis is also new and has a composite rear sub-frame that looks similar to the 890 Duke. The rear view mirrors are also borrowed from the 1290 Super Duke R. The bike also gets a new underbelly exhaust system and a split seat configuration. The overall design is sharper, sportier, and more aggressive than the previous model.

New Engine and Performance

The heart of the new Duke 390 is a new 399cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, which is expected to be more powerful and refined than the outgoing 373cc unit. While KTM has not revealed the exact power output figures yet, it is speculated that the new engine will produce around 45 bhp and 38 Nm of torque, which is slightly higher than the current model’s 43 bhp and 37 Nm. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch and a quick-shifter. The bike also gets ride-by-wire technology and three riding modes: Street, Rain, and Track. The Track mode allows the rider to adjust the throttle response, traction control, ABS, and launch control settings according to their preference.

New Features and Electronics

The bike gets a new five-inch colour TFT display that shows all the vital information and also offers smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth. The rider can access various functions like turn-by-turn navigation, music control, call alerts, and more through the display and the new switchgear. The bike also gets dual-channel ABS with cornering ABS capabilities, traction control, launch control, Supermoto mode, and more. The Supermoto mode allows the rider to disable the rear wheel ABS for some fun sliding action.

The suspension setup consists of 43mm WP Apex open cartridge upside-down front forks with adjustable compression and rebound damping, and a WP Apex offset rear monoshock with preload and five-step rebound adjustment. The brakes are also upgraded with a larger 320mm front disc brake with a four-piston radial fixed calliper, and a 240mm rear disc brake with a two-piston floating calliper. The wheels are also new and lighter than before, fitted with Michelin tyres.
