What are Shelf-Clouds?
Shelf clouds are low-lying horizontal cloud formations characterized by a clearly demarcated line of solid clouds. Usually found on the leading edge of storms and extending horizontally beneath their main cloud base, shelf clouds may also be known by other names like Arcus clouds (which includes both shelf clouds and roll clouds).
Shelf clouds form when a mass of cold and dense air is driven into warmer air mass by wind currents. This typically happens during thunderstorm downdrafts where cold air rapidly descends and disperses quickly in an upward current, creating strong gust fronts. Pushing upwards with its own weight causes condensation that forms wedge-shaped cloud formation that rotates horizontally.
