Tata Punch CNG vs Hyundai Exter: The micro SUV segment is one of the fastest-growing and most competitive segments in the Indian automobile market. Tata Motors has been ruling this segment with its Punch SUV, which was launched in October 2022. However, Hyundai is gearing up to challenge Tata with its upcoming Exter SUV, which is expected to launch in June 2023. Both the SUVs will offer a petrol engine option, but the Exter will also have a CNG bi-fuel option from day one. This will make the Exter the first vehicle in the segment to get a CNG option. So, how do these two micro SUVs compare in terms of design, features, performance, and price? Let’s find out.

Design

The Tata Punch and the Hyundai Exter have distinct design languages that reflect their respective brand identities. The Punch has a boxy and muscular stance, with sharp lines and creases. It features a signature Tata grille with tri-arrow motifs, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, flared wheel arches, roof rails, and LED tail lamps. The Punch has a length of 3827 mm, a width of 1742 mm, a height of 1615 mm, and a wheelbase of 2445 mm. It also has a ground clearance of 187 mm and a boot space of 366 litres.

The Exter, on the other hand, has a more curvy and sleek profile, with smooth surfaces and rounded edges. It features a cascading grille with chrome accents, swept-back headlamps with LED DRLs, black cladding on the lower body, dual-tone alloy wheels, and wrap-around tail lamps. The Exter has not revealed its dimensions yet, but it is expected to be slightly smaller than the Punch in terms of length and height. However, it might have a longer wheelbase and a larger boot space than the Punch.

Features

Both the Punch and the Exter are loaded with features that enhance their comfort, convenience, safety, and entertainment quotient. The Punch offers a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, steering-mounted controls, voice-activated electric sunroof, cruise control, rear parking camera with sensors, push-button start-stop, and keyless entry. The Punch also boasts of a five-star safety rating from Global NCAP and comes with six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP with hill hold control, traction control, corner stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

The Exter is expected to offer similar features as the Punch, but it might have some additional ones as well. The Exter might come with an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a wireless phone charger, a semi-digital instrument cluster with MID display, ambient lighting, rear AC vents, and dashcam with dual camera.

The Punch and the Exter both use a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 83 bhp and 114 Nm of torque in petrol mode. However, the Exter also offers a CNG option that reduces the output to 69 bhp and 95 Nm of torque. The Punch comes with either a five-speed manual or an AMT gearbox, while the Exter offers both manual and AMT options for petrol as well as CNG variants.

Mileage : Tata Punch CNG vs Hyundai Exter

The Punch CNG uses Tata’s twin-cylinder technology that splits the CNG tank into two 30-litre cylinders. This helps save some boot space as well as improve weight distribution. The Punch CNG claims to deliver a mileage of around 30 km/kg. The Exter CNG uses a single 65-litre tank that might compromise on boot space but offer more range. The Exter CNG is expected to deliver a mileage of around 26 km/kg.

Price

The Tata Punch is priced from Rs. 5.99 lakh to Rs. 9.47 lakh (ex-showroom) for the petrol variants. The Punch CNG is expected to be priced from Rs. 6.96 lakh to Rs. 10.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The Hyundai Exter is yet to announce its prices but it is expected to be priced from Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom) for the petrol variants. The Exter CNG is estimated to be priced from Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh (ex-showroom.
