The Upcoming MG 4 is a battery electric small family car that is expected to launch in India in April 2024. It is the first vehicle to be based on SAIC’s battery-electric Modular Scalable Platform, which enables 800-volt charging technology and battery swapping. The Upcoming MG 4 EV will compete with other electric hatchbacks such as the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Tata Nexon EV Max, and the MG ZS EV. In this article, we will look at the range, battery and charge time of the upcoming MG 4 EV.

The Upcoming MG 4 will be available with two battery pack options – 51 kWh and a larger 64 kWh. The former produces 170 hp, while the latter produces 203 hp. Torque output on both versions is rated at 250 Nm and both come in a single-motor, rear-wheel drive configuration.

The range of the Upcoming MG 4 will vary depending on the battery size and the driving mode. The smaller battery will offer a WLTP-tested range of 350 km (217 miles), while the larger battery will offer a range of 450 km (280 miles) in the Comfort model and 435 km (270 miles) in the Luxury model. The WLTP test cycle is more realistic than the NEDC test cycle, which tends to overestimate the range of electric vehicles.

The MG 4 EV will also have three driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – that will affect the range and performance of the car. Eco mode will optimize the energy consumption and extend the range, while Sport mode will increase the power output and reduce the range. Normal mode will balance between efficiency and performance.

Battery of Upcoming MG 4

The Upcoming MG 4 EV will use a lithium-ion battery that is composed of either lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells. The LFP battery has a capacity of 50.3 kWh and is used in the Standard model, while the NMC battery has a capacity of either 51 or 64 kWh and is used in the other models.

The battery of the MG 4 EV is designed to be thin and flat, with a thickness of only 110 mm (4.3 in) for the smallest capacity. This reduces the height of the car and lowers the center of gravity, which improves the handling and stability of the car. The battery is also integrated into the chassis of the car, which increases the rigidity and safety of the car.

The battery of the MG 4 EV is also designed to be swappable, which means that it can be replaced with a fully charged one in a matter of minutes. This feature will allow drivers to extend their range without waiting for charging. The battery swapping stations will be operated by SAIC’s subsidiary Roewe New Energy Vehicle Service Co., Ltd., which plans to build more than 10,000 stations across China by 2025.

Upcoming MG 4 Charge Time

The charge time of the MG 4 EV will depend on the battery size and the charging method. The car will support both AC and DC charging, with different voltages and currents.

For AC charging, the car will have a maximum input power of 11 kW, which means that it can be fully charged in about five hours using a wallbox or a public charger. For DC charging, the car will have two options – 400-volt or 800-volt – depending on the model.

The Standard model will only support 400-volt DC charging, which has a maximum input power of 100 kW. This means that it can be charged from zero to 80 percent in about 30 minutes using a fast charger. The other models will support both 400-volt and 800-volt DC charging, which have maximum input powers of 100 kW and 200 kW respectively. This means that they can be charged from zero to 80 percent in about 15 minutes using an ultra-fast charger. The car will also have a smart charging system that can automatically adjust the charging speed according to the battery temperature and state of charge.

The table below summarizes the range, battery and charge time of the different models of the MG 4 EV:

Conclusion

The MG 4 EV is a promising electric hatchback that will offer a decent range, a fast charge time and a swappable battery. It will also have a sleek design, a spacious interior and a high-tech infotainment system. The car is expected to launch in India in April 2024, with an estimated price of 30 lakh rupees. The car will be showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, where more details and specifications will be revealed.
