Tata Motors is gearing up to launch its new midsize SUV, the Curvv, in 2024. The Curvv will be available in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrain variants, but that’s not all. According to recent concept sketches released by the company, the Tata Curvv may also offer a compressed natural gas (CNG) option for the eco-conscious buyers.

What is CNG and why is it important?
CNG stands for compressed natural gas, which is a cleaner and cheaper alternative to petrol and diesel. The CNG emits less carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter than conventional fuels, making it more environment-friendly. CNG also reduces the dependency on imported oil and helps save fuel costs.
However, CNG has some drawbacks as well. Also CNG tanks take up more space than petrol or diesel tanks, reducing the boot capacity of the vehicle. CNG also has lower energy density than petrol or diesel, meaning it requires more fuel to travel the same distance. CNG vehicles also have limited availability of refuelling stations in India.
Upcoming Tata Curvv CNG Engine, Mileage

Upcoming Tata Curvv is expected to feature Tata Motors’ innovative twin-cylinder technology for CNG tanks, which helps optimize boot space. This technology has already been patented by Tata Motors and was first introduced in the Altroz CNG model. It has also been confirmed to be utilized in the upcoming CNG variants of the Tiago and Tigor.
The twin-cylinder technology splits the CNG tank into two smaller cylinders that can be placed in different locations in the vehicle, such as under the rear seat or behind the rear axle. This frees up more space for luggage and passengers. The twin-cylinder technology also reduces the weight of the CNG tank and improves the balance of the vehicle.
The Curvv is likely to get a 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options for its ICE variant. The power and torque figures are expected to be around 125hp and 225Nm respectively. The CNG variant will use the same engine but with a lower output due to the lower calorific value of CNG. The exact specifications of the CNG variant are yet to be revealed by Tata Motors.
The Curvv will also get an electric variant that will offer a range of 400-500km and a dual motor set-up with all-wheel drive. The electric variant will compete with other electric SUVs in the market, such as the Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV.
Features
The Tata Curvv CNG will come with a host of features that will make it stand out from its rivals. Some of these features include:
- A futuristic design with a coupe-like roofline, LED headlights and taillights, dual-tone alloy wheels and a large grille.
- A spacious and premium cabin with a two-spoke steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system with connected car features, leather upholstery and ambient lighting.
- A 360-degree camera, auto park assist and dual-zone climate control for enhanced convenience and safety.
- A sunroof, cruise control, wireless charging, keyless entry and push-button start for added comfort and convenience.

Tata Motors has confirmed that the Curvv will launch in 2024, with the electric variant expected to debut first. The ICE variant will follow soon after. The prices of the Curvv are yet to be announced by Tata Motors, but we expect them to be competitive with its rivals such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.
The Curvv CNG variant will likely be priced lower than the petrol variant, but higher than the diesel variant (if offered). The CNG variant will appeal to those who want a more economical and eco-friendly option without compromising on performance or features.
The Curvv is one of the most awaited launches from Tata Motors in 2024. It will showcase Tata Motors’ technological prowess and design excellence in the midsize SUV segment.
